Amazon Announces €18 Billion Data and AI Investment in Spain

Posted by

Spain’s position as a growing European technology hub has received a major boost after Amazon announced an additional €18 billion investment to expand its cloud and data centre infrastructure across the country.

The announcement was made during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the company confirmed plans to strengthen its Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities in Spain.

This new commitment builds on a previously announced €15.7 billion investment, bringing Amazon’s total planned investment in Spain to approximately €33.7 billion, one of the largest technology infrastructure investments in Europe.

Spain Emerging as a European Data Infrastructure Hub

The investment will focus primarily on expanding data centres and cloud computing infrastructure, particularly in the Aragón region, where Amazon already operates major AWS facilities.

These centres form part of Amazon’s strategy to expand its European AI and cloud computing capabilities, allowing businesses, startups and governments to access advanced digital infrastructure.

Data centres are critical infrastructure for:

  • Artificial intelligence development
  • Cloud computing services
  • Digital platforms and e-commerce
  • Enterprise data storage
  • Machine learning systems

By expanding this infrastructure, Amazon is strengthening Spain’s role as a key technology gateway for southern Europe.

A Long-Term Technology Commitment

The project is expected to generate substantial economic impact beyond the initial investment.

Amazon estimates the expansion could contribute approximately €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP by 2035, while supporting thousands of highly skilled roles across data centre operations, engineering, construction and supply chains.

The company’s cloud infrastructure will also support European companies building AI-powered services and digital platforms, further positioning Spain within the global technology economy.

Spain’s Growing Attraction for Global Tech Investment

Amazon’s announcement reflects a broader trend of major technology companies investing in Spain’s digital infrastructure.

Several factors are driving this growth:

  • Competitive energy and infrastructure costs
  • Strong fibre and connectivity networks
  • Strategic geographic position between Europe, Africa and Latin America
  • Government investment in digital transformation

Together, these factors are helping Spain emerge as an increasingly attractive location for large-scale data infrastructure and technology development.

The NLS View

Large-scale digital infrastructure investments are increasingly shaping global real estate and economic landscapes.

As Spain attracts major technology and AI infrastructure projects, the country strengthens its position not only as a lifestyle destination but also as a strategic European technology hub.

For investors and international businesses, these developments reinforce Spain’s long-term trajectory as a centre for innovation, talent and global connectivity.
