BENAHAVÍS, Costa del Sol — A fast-moving wildfire that broke out Sunday near the Ermita del Rosario, just off the A-7175 leading into Benahavís, remained active into a second day on Monday, keeping one of the Costa del Sol’s most sought-after inland towns on alert.
The blaze was first reported to emergency services shortly after midday on Sunday, with 112 Andalucía logging the alert at 13:07. Officials have not yet confirmed an official cause. One resident who says they were among the first to call emergency services described seeing a car on fire at the roadside near kilometre 5 of the A-7175, close to where the blaze is believed to have taken hold, though investigators have not linked this to the fire’s origin. Strong easterly winds, gusting to around 50km/h, combined with the area’s steep terrain to push the fire quickly toward residential land, prompting Andalucía’s regional government to raise the response to Operational Situation 1 and send an ES-Alert warning — in both Spanish and English — to phones across the affected zone.
More than 210 personnel worked through the night to hold the fire’s advance and shield homes, drawing on 26 specialist ground groups, seven Forest Fire Reinforcement Brigades (BRICA), 14 water tankers and three heavy machines from Plan Infoca, Andalucía’s forest fire service. Aerial units resumed operations at first light on Monday.
Around 50 residents of the upmarket Montemayor Alto urbanisation were evacuated as the fire pushed toward the Montemayor area, where heavier undergrowth gave it more fuel; they have since been allowed back home. The nearby La Coja urbanisation, along with scattered properties to the north and west of Benahavís, remained under strict confinement, with residents ordered to stay inside masonry buildings rather than evacuate. No homes have been reported destroyed or structurally damaged as of Monday, though the fire has come close enough to residential land to trigger the evacuation and confinement orders. At least three injuries have been reported since the fire began, including a resident who was burned while attempting to fight the flames and a forest firefighter hurt in a fall.
The A-7175, the main link between Marbella and Benahavís, was briefly closed to assist emergency crews but reopened overnight, allowing residents who had been caught outside the town when access was restricted to return — though they, too, remain under instructions to stay inside.
Regional emergency minister Antonio Sanz said protecting residents and residential areas remains the operation’s top priority. Forecasters expect conditions to turn more favourable through Monday, with humidity climbing toward 80% and the easterly winds that had driven flames toward Estepona expected to weaken.

Benahavís sits at the heart of some of the Costa del Sol’s most active new-build and resale corridors, feeding buyer interest into neighbouring Nueva Andalucía, La Quinta and Marbella’s Golden Triangle. Andalucía’s high-risk wildfire season runs until October 15, and this is the second significant fire to threaten the Benahavís–Estepona corridor in as many months, following a larger blaze in July that forced mass evacuations. For agents and developers active in the area, the incident is a reminder that late-summer fire risk remains a live factor in inland hillside developments — one increasingly raised by buyers weighing insurance, access and resale considerations in the region’s premium urbanisations.
